I was on a boat to break the siege of Gaza in 2010. Why a Jewish boat is an important question for it could have been  any form of active resistance. It is important to tell you that I am an assimilated Jew with no affiliation to organized religion. I have always been more political than religious, a sixties hippie and active war resister. I don’t believe in wars and am a pacifist. I believe in listening and dialogue with  the enemy as a way to understand one another. In Zionist Israel where violence is endemic, we witness a cycle of hate that has deepened with each generation.

There is a strong distinction between Zionism and Judaism. This cannot be overemphasized and it helped to explain my strong desire to make this distinction by joining a Jewish boat to Gaza. The boat is significant because of my background,  but more important it gave me an opportunity speak out against human rights abuses as a Jew who is not a Zionist. To assume that every Jew supports the Israeli Zionist vision is an unfortunate misconception cleverly manipulated by the Zionist power structure. The Zionist ideal is a Jewish religious state that oppresses the Palestinians. The hallmark of Zionism is harsh nationalism that imposes itself in a completely illegitimate and amoral way to crush the freedom and spirit of the Palestinian people.

Because I am a Jew, I would have been exterminated in Germany. I survived because my father helped my mother and myself to leave for the United States . This was not easy. Our  exodus has been imprinted in my being for my entire life. That is just the way it is. I want to say again, I am a Jew and not a Zionist. Therefore the actions of the Zionist Israeli government is NOT IN MY NAME . Let the  people of the world  and all religions join together to demand full equality for Palestinians and  Israeli citizens  and let Zionism end its reign of terror.

In these troubled times, with a president who is mindless, we are dangerously close to more destruction.

As we witness Israel’s endless, disturbing  and hard held belief that security brings peace, it seems that nothing is farther from the truth for it is only peace and tolerance that brings security.

Stand with me to rage against the crimes  committed for so many decades against Palestinians who continue their  brave struggle for their homeland and dignity. Not in my name shall the obscene prisons and the continuous debasement of human rights be allowed to exist.

NO FREEDOM IN THE LAND OF FALSE PROPHETS

I ask, how can the Jewish State find freedom as an occupier?

An occupation has eaten Israel where mosques burn and a faux museum sits on desecrated Muslim tombs.

They call it Museum of Tolerance, I call it museum cleansing, killer of those deemed inferior.

False prophets, destroyer of 800,000 olive and citrus plants.

Collective abuse, fishermen attacked like vermin by Israeli killer boats.

Apartheid! Words we dare not write or speak. Condemned by true believers,

The Zionist story makes one shutter.

I’ve heard the racist words before when Jews were driven from their homes and villified.

Now I hear it all again from a rabbi contender for the Jewish heroes competition.

Asked how Jews should treat their neighbors he said:

“The only way to fight a moral war is the Jewish way. Destroy the holy sites, kill men, women , children and cattle.”

I remember another time, “No Jews Allowed.” Germany nearly succeeded.

Arabs not allowed, a Zionist story.

No Palestinians to live with dignity for “We” are the chosen people.

It is written in the Old Testament.

It is because I am a Jew and once had a dream of a different Israel that  I speak out against the cruelty bestowed on the Palestinian population and the beauty that was their land and culture.  Oh god how could this have happened?  I so strongly believe that Jews had the moral obligation to not oppress as they were once oppressed. It did not happen.

W H Auden wrote this timely poem.

September 1, 1939

Now I and the public know What all school children learn Those to whom evil is done Do evil in return.”

GAZA

Israel! You have risen from The ashes of the holocaust To become your own enemy.

Israel! You should have learned so well Man’s inhumanity to man Is hell.

Palestine! We are your brothers and sisters.

May this nightmare end.
